Rock Island is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Colorado County, in south-central Texas, located along U.S. Highway 90A roughly 12 miles southwest of Columbus, the county seat. The community lies in the coastal prairie, a region long defined by rice farming, ranching, and agriculture, and it remains a small, rural settlement with no incorporated municipal government. The community's history reaches back to the late 1800s. Originally known as Crasco, it grew from a core of 39 farming families to a population of about 367 by 1904, reaching an all-time high of around 500 by 1925.
