Austin is the state capital of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and rock. Its many parks and lakes are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating. South of the city, Formula One's Circuit of the Americas raceway has hosted the United States Grand Prix.
Residents of Austin are known as&nbsp;Austinites.&nbsp;They include a diverse mix of government employees, college students, musicians, high-tech workers, digital marketers, and&nbsp;blue-collar workers. The city's official slogan promotes Austin as "The Live Music Capital of the World", a reference to the city's many musicians and live music venues, as well as the long-running&nbsp;PBS&nbsp;TV concert series&nbsp;Austin City Limits.&nbsp;The city also adopted "Silicon Hills" as a nickname in the 1990s due to a rapid influx of technology and development companies. In recent years, some Austinites have adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird",&nbsp;which refers to the desire to protect small, unique, and local businesses from being overrun by large corporations.&nbsp;Since the late 19th century, Austin has also been known as the "City of the Violet Crown", because of the colorful glow of light across the hills just after sunset.
In 1987, Austin originated and remains the site for&nbsp;South by Southwest&nbsp;(stylized as SXSW and colloquially referred to as&nbsp;South By), an annual conglomeration of parallel&nbsp;film,&nbsp;interactive media, and&nbsp;music festivals&nbsp;and&nbsp;conferences that take place in mid-March. Emerging from a strong economic focus on government and education, since the 1990s, Austin has become a center for technology and business. A number of&nbsp;Fortune 500&nbsp;companies have headquarters or regional offices in Austin, including&nbsp;3M,&nbsp;Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Austin

The Texas Hill Country is a geographic region of Central and South Texas, forming the southeast part of the Edwards Plateau. Given its location, climate, terrain, and vegetation, the Hill Country can be considered the border between the American Southeast and Southwest. The region represents the very remote countryside of Central Texas but also is home to growing suburban neighborhoods and affluent retirement communities. The region is notable for its karst topography and tall rugged hills of limestone or granite. Many of the hills rise to a height of 400&ndash;500 feet (120&ndash;150 m) above the surrounding plains and valleys, with Packsaddle Mountain rising to a height of 800 feet (240 m) above the Llano River in Kingsland. The Hill Country also includes the Llano Uplift and the second-largest granite dome in the United States, Enchanted Rock. The terrain throughout the region is punctuated by a thin layer of topsoil and many exposed rocks and boulders, making the region very dry and prone to flash flooding. Native vegetation in the region includes various yucca, prickly pear cactus, desert spoon, and wildflowers in the Llano Uplift. The predominant trees in the region are ashe juniper and Texas live oak. Bound on the east by the Balcones Escarpment, the Hill Country reaches into the far northern portions of San Antonio and the western portions of Austin. As a result of springs discharging water stored in the Edwards Aquifer, several cities such as Austin, San Marcos, and New Braunfels were settled at the base of the Balcones Escarpment. The region's economy is one of the fastest growing in the United States.

Hill Country

San Antonio is a major city in south-central Texas with a rich colonial heritage. The Alamo, an 18th-century Spanish mission preserved as a museum, marks an infamous 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico. Following the San Antonio River, the miles-long River Walk is a landmark pedestrian promenade lined with cafes and shops. HemisFair Park&rsquo;s 750-ft. Tower of the Americas overlooks the city.
