Purmela is an unincorporated community in northwestern Coryell County, Texas, about thirteen miles northwest of the county seat of Gatesville. It sits at the junction of Farm Roads 932 and 1241, in gently rolling ranch and farm country where open pasture gives way to scattered stands of live oak and pecan along the creeks. The settlement traces its beginnings to 1879, when storeowner Martin Dremien established a store and became the community's first postmaster when the post office was granted that same year. Dremien's store and the early crossroads trade anchored a modest rural stop that served nearby farmers and ranchers. Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Purmela remained a small agricultural settlement. It functioned as a local gathering point for the surrounding countryside rather than a commercial center, a role that Gatesville filled after the railroad reached that town in 1882.
