Alamo Heights is a city in Bexar County, Texas, entirely surrounded by the city of San Antonio and located roughly five miles north of downtown. Its roots reach back to the original 1836 survey of San Antonio, when the land was included as public acreage in the young city's first survey. The area later passed to banker and philanthropist George Brackenridge, who built a mansion on the property and christened it Alamo Heights. In the early 20th century, the Anderson-McLane mansion became the Argyle Hotel, and the surrounding acreage was platted as a suburban residential community. Rather than join San Antonio, Alamo Heights incorporated as a separate city, a choice that still defines its independent civic identity and self-governed services. About 7,400 residents live in Alamo Heights, with the U.S. Census Bureau recording a population of 7,357 in 2020. The city is known for tree-lined streets, mature landscaping, and a mix of historic cottages and larger estate homes, all within minutes of San Antonio's urban core. The headwaters of the San Antonio River lie nearby, and the city shares its school district with the neighboring enclaves of Olmos Park and Terrell Hills, forming a connected cluster of established neighborhoods north of downtown. Broadway is the commercial spine of the community, lined with independent restaurants, shops, and civic landmarks. San Antonio International Airport sits about three miles north, and downtown is a short drive south, giving Alamo Heights both a self-contained feel and direct access to the region's largest employment centers. Its preserved architecture, mature trees, and long-standing community traditions make it one of the most recognizable residential enclaves in the San Antonio area, appealing to households seeking an established, walkable setting close to the urban core.
